Topic: Maize - Crop Production
Subject: Information about Cropping Systems for Maize
Message: Dear farmer, With maize, crops like soybean, black gram (urdbean), green gram (mungbean) and cowpea can be grown. These legume crops are grown in-between 2 rows of maize spaced 45 cm apart. In Bihar mixed cropping of groundnut with maize is quite profitable. In certain areas maize is intercropped with pigeonpea - One row of pigeonpea between 2 rows of maize spaced 45 cm apart. In rabi maize, intercropping of pea, French bean, lentil, potato, onion, fenugreek etc. is done in different parts of the country. In irrigated areas of north India, barley, wheat, toria, potato, black gram (urdbean), berseem, sugarcane, alfalfa, oats are raised during rabi after maize grown in kharif. Some of the most important crop rotations with maize are: Maize-wheat or chickpea or pea; Maize-wheat-cowpea; Maize-potato-onion/ wheat/tobacco; Maize-berseem or oat; Maize-alfalfa-maize-potato-sugarcane; Maize-toria-wheat; Maize-wheat-mung bean or urd bean; Maize-potato-maize; Maize-wheat-cotton-berseem; Maize-oat-napier grass; Maize-senji-sugarcane-cotton; Maize-wheat-sorghum-sugarcane and Maize-wheat-sugarcane.

Topic: Wheat- Crop Production
Subject:Information about Pre-emergence/Post-emergence weed control for Wheat
Message: Dear farmer, For wheat, initial 30-40 days after sowing are critical in the context of crop-weed competition. In case of cultivation of dwarf varieties, grassy weeds in particular are the major problem. Manual weeding or hoeing after25-30 days after cultivation followed by second round 40-50 days after cultivation effectively control weed infestation. Spraying the field with 2, 4-D ethyl ester @ 0.4 kg/ha in 700-800 lit water, 35 days after sowing is recommended for broad leaved weeds. Grasses and sedges growing as weed can also be controlled by spraying Isoproturon (Isoguard/Tolkan/Aretan) @ 1kg/ha or Metoxuron (Dosanex/SAN 6602) or Methabenzthiazuron (Tribunil/Ucil) @ 1.5 kg/ha 30-35 days after sowing. Pre-emergence application of Pendimethalin (Stomp/Prowl) @ 1 kg/ha provides broad spectrum weed control weedicides.

Subject: Information about Description and Management of Black Mould Disease in Onion
Message: Dear Farmer, Black mould disease cause severe loss to wheat crop. To manage this disease: disinfect soil by treating seed bed with Methyl bromide @ 1 kg/25Sqm or fumigate soil with Formaldehyde solution. Dilute 8ml of 40% formaldehyde in one litre of water, pour one litre of solution in the drench and leave for thirty minutes for vapours to fumigate. Cover it with polythene bag to allow vapours to saturate the soil. Then allow to dry for 2-3 days and take up sowing. Seed treatment with Carbendazim 0.25% i.e. 2.5g/kg of seeds also reduce the disease.

Subject: Information about Method of sowing for Wheat
Message: Dear Farmers, Bi-directional sowing is special method of sowing wheat crop. In this method, half of the recommended seed and fertilizer are sown in one direction in length-wise and the other half in other direction in width-wise followed by light planking. The seeds are sown in rows 20-22 cm apart at a shallow depth of 4 cm. This method of sowing has been found to yield higher than one direction sowing.

Topic: Soyabean- Plant Protection
Subject: Information about Description and Management of Rust in Soyabean
Message: Dear farmers,Rust is a serious fungal disease of soybean. The disease symptoms appear as small water soaked spots which gradually increase in size, turning from grey to tan or brown. These spots become dark brown and get covered by buff or pale-brown powdery spore masses. In the later stage tan to dark brown or reddish brown spots appear on the underside of leaves, petioles, stem and pods. In severe case leaf necrosis and complete death of infected areas may result. For mangement of disease by cultural means, Destroy crop debris and plough the field deep during summer. Do not cultivate soybean in rabi season. Use tolerant cultivars like Ankur, JS 80-21, PK 1024, PK 1029.Spray Mancozeb at 3gm/l of water or Hexaconazole or Propoconazole 0.8 litre per ha. Spray schedule has to be initiated before symptoms appear. Read and strictly follow the instructions given on the packet, on how to apply it.

Subject:Information about Description and Management of Yellow Mosaic in Soyabean
Message:Dear farmers,Yellow mosaic is an important viral disease of soybean. The disease causes serious yield losses in soybean. Soybean mosaic virus is seed borne and spread by insects which act as vectors.Characteristic symptoms of yellow mosaic appear as bright yellow uneven spots on the leaves (mottling). These yellow spots are scattered in bands along the major veins. At maturity, dead tissues appear in the yellow areas.Diseased plants are usually stunted with distorted (puckered, crinkled, ruffled, stunted, narrow) leaves. Pods become flattened or curved and contain smaller and less number of seed. Infected seeds gets mottled. Infected seeds fail to germinate or they produce diseased seedlings. Cool and humid climate is favorable for disease spread. To prevent yellow mosaic disease incidence culturally, grow resistant/tolerant varieties like SL 96, SL295 or MAUS 47. Maintain weed free fields. Remove infected seedlings and plants and burn them. Two foliar sprays of Thiamethoxam 25 WG @ 100 g/ha or methyl demeton 800 ml/ha at 30 and 45 days after sowing for checking white fly population are required.
